Town Hall and Facilities Closed for Remainder of February 23

The PCSP Town Hall and Facilities will remain closed for the day on Monday, February 23rd, 2026 due to significant snowfall. To help with snow clearing efforts, municipalities across the region are asking residents to only travel when necessary, and if you have to travel to please allow enough time to reach your destination safely.

The pre-planned babysitting course has been postponed, with registered participants being contacted by course coordinators.

As a reminder there have been changes to waste collection, please have all items for collection outside by 8:30 am on the noted collection days:

  • All garbage and recycling scheduled for Monday, February 23rd, including routes previously rescheduled to that date, will now be collected on Thursday, February 26th.
  • No other waste collection dates are impacted at this time.

We kindly remind residents that the winter parking ban remains in effect and to please be patient as our crews are working to clear roadways and maintain service levels. In the event of deteriorating conditions, residents are reminded to keep a safe distance from snow plows, and do not play in snowbanks near roadways or driveways

Town staff are continuing to monitor the weather conditions, with Public Works crews scheduled and prepared to respond. Residents are encouraged to monitor the Community News section on the homepage of pcsp.ca, as well as the Town’s social media channels, for the latest updates.
If assistance is required outside of regular business hours, please contact the Town’s after-hours line at 709-895-8000

Important Winter Safety Reminders

In the event of deteriorating conditions, residents are reminded of the following:

  • When snow clearing crews are operating, please keep a safe distance.

  • Wear warm, reflective clothing when outdoors so crews and other residents can see you.

  • Do not play in snowbanks near roadways or driveways.

  • Please be patient and courteous with snow clearing crews as they work to keep roads accessible. Initial clearing focuses on opening routes for emergency vehicles.

  • Ensure your household has an emergency kit with enough supplies to last at least 72 hours, including food, water, pet food, prescriptions, flashlights, a portable radio, and extra batteries.

Emergency Preparedness Recommendations

The Town of Portugal Cove–St. Philip’s Volunteer Fire Department encourages residents to take the following preparedness steps:

  • Maintain a basic home emergency kit, including food and pet food, drinking water, prescriptions, a first aid kit, battery-powered flashlights, and a portable radio.

  • Use flashlights instead of candles whenever possible. If candles are used, never leave them unattended.

  • Residents on well water are advised to fill bathtubs with water for household use, such as flushing toilets, and to ensure extra drinking water is available in the event of a power outage.

  • Secure outdoor items that may become hazards in high winds, including patio furniture, BBQs, play structures, and garbage bins.

  • Charge mobile devices in advance of potential power outages.

  • Know the location of your household fire extinguisher, water shut-off valve, and electrical panel.

  • Test smoke alarms regularly to ensure they are functioning properly.

  • Stay informed by monitoring weather forecasts and local news updates.
