PCSP State of Emergency Officially Lifted 

The Town of Portugal Cove – St. Philip’s will not reinstate a state of emergency. It has been lifted in full. Businesses are free to resume operations as normal. Residents are asked to be cautious while we continue our snow clearing efforts. Please reduce your speeds and restrict travelling at night if possible. Respect our neighboring municipalities’ states of emergencies.

Garbage Collection to Resume on Thursday

Our regular garbage and recycling collection schedule will resume on Thursday, January 23rd. Those routes that have been postponed since January 17th will resume on their regular scheduled pickup days. If you are not able to access your garbage box please cover your garbage and place near the road in a visible location. We understand that garbage volumes may be larger than normal. Due to the circumstances there will be delays. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work towards resuming normal operations. Please call 895-8000 if you have any issues.

Recreation Facilities and Programs

The Recreation Centre will resume normal programming on Thursday (except adult fitness scheduled for 9:30 am is cancelled) and the Library will open as scheduled on Monday.

The state of emergency has been lifted today since 6 am. We will update early this afternoon if we are reinstating at 9 pm tonight. Businesses are permitted to open while the state of emergency is lifted. As we continue to widen roads we ask that residents only travel if necessary. Please respect our neighbouring municipalities’ States of Emergencies.

The Town Hall is open today. However, all recreation facilities including the Recreation Centre and Library will remain closed and all programming cancelled. Our garbage collection will remain suspended with no collection operating today. We will make an announcement on garbage collection for the rest of the week early this afternoon.

The state of emergency will be lifted tomorrow at 6 am. We will evaluate tomorrow if we are reinstating at 9 pm. Businesses are permitted to open while the state of emergency is lifted. As we continue to widen roads we ask that residents only travel if necessary. Please respect out neighbouring municipalities states of emergencies.

Non-Emergency Text Support Line for Deaf or Hard of Hearing Community Members

The Provincial Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment also has a text line available for those who are deaf or hard of hearing to request snow clearing, access to essential medical supplies and services, and other non-emergency matters. Text 709-691-9493.

Reminder – For those who are able to call, calls related to non-emergencies, such as seniors requiring snow removal, can be referred to the provincial emergency operations centre at (709) 729-3703. This line will be available from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. daily as recovery operations continue. Anyone who calls the line is asked to be patient. Calls are being prioritized on the basis of need and not logged on a first-come, first-service basis.

Businesses in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s are permitted to open while the state of emergency is lifted. Roads are not yet widened to comfortably accommodate high traffic. Please stay home unless it is necessary. Please respect our neighbouring municipalities’ States of Emergencies. We expect to reinstate our State of Emergency and ban travel on roads at 9:00 pm tonight. If you require assistance please contact us on social media or 895-8000.

We also remind residents that the Town Hall is open today, however, all recreation facilities will remain closed today and programming cancelled. Due to Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility being closed, garbage collection that was rescheduled from Friday and today’s scheduled collection is postponed. We will update later today on the plan for garbage collection moving forward.

We are prepared to open a warming centre if necessary. Roads are not yet widened to comfortably accommodate high traffic. Please stay home unless it is necessary. Please respect our neighbouring municipalities states of emergencies. We expect to reinstate our state of emergency and ban travel on roads at 9:00 pm tonight. The state of emergency declared yesterday remains in effect. Residents are reminded that vehicles are prohibited from using the town’s streets, with the exception of emergency & snow clearing operations. All businesses must remain closed. Snow clearing operations continue, but please stay off the roads until the state of emergency is lifted.

State of Emergency Declared 

The Town of Portugal Cove – St. Philip’s has declared a state of emergency. Residents are advised that vehicles are prohibited from using the town’s streets, with the exception of emergency & snow clearing operations. All businesses are ordered to close immediately if they have not already done so. The Town is prepared to open a warming centre if it becomes necessary. Please continue to check here for  updates. Update: Friday, January 17 at 12:00 noon

The Town is asking that all residents remain in their homes. Please do not travel as driving conditions are deteriorating.

Snow clearing operations remain in effect right now. However, due to poor visibility, we expect to experience some delays while the storm intensifies. We continue to work with our Volunteer Fire Department to ensure that residents can be accessed in case of emergency, but, response times may be delayed.
