Community Generosity Shines Through Success of Food Drive in Portugal Cove – St. Philip’s
Residents and Businesses Come Together for Those in Need

Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, NL – Following a two-week long Community Food Drive campaign, the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s (PCSP) is proud to announce we have made a significant donation to the two local food banks servicing our town. In spite of the financial challenges many families and businesses have faced this year due to COVID-19, the community spirit of benevolence remains strong in PCSP. As soon as the Community Food Drive initiative began, requests from local businesses and individuals wishing to show their support came pouring in. Dominion also kindly joined the efforts and contributed many grocery items to the cause. Thanks to the generosity of all donors, both the Parish of St. Lawrence Food Bank and the Northeast Avalon Food Bank are now in a much better position for the busy back-to-school season.

With social distancing restrictions in place, this food drive looked a little different than others the town has hosted in the past. Donations were made by donors scheduling a contactless pick-up directly from their home or business, rather than the typical drop-off style food drive. However, while the means of collection may have been modified, the number of donations received was better than ever! Along with her fellow councillors, Mayor Carol McDonald assisted with the collection efforts. Mayor McDonald explained, “It was heartwarming to see our community come together in this way. It’s been a tough year, but it gives me great hope to see such kindness from our neighbours and friends here in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s. Thank you to everyone who made this initiative possible, it means so much.”

While this Community Food Drive campaign officially ends tomorrow, Friday, September 4th, the need for food bank donations in our community is always ongoing and there is still time for those wishing to contribute! If you would like to make a food or financial donation to our local food banks, please contact [email protected] for details on how to make donation arrangements, as typical drop-offs are not in place due to COVID-19.
