PCSP’s First 5K in Aid of Inclusivity

PORTUGAL COVE-ST.PHILIP’S – With the Regatta Festival around the corner, the Town of Portugal Cove – St. Philip’s (PCSP) is gearing up for another great year. This year comes with a bonus, the new 5k Dory Dash, a fun run with proceeds going to buying inclusive equipment for the Town.

The Regatta Festival has been a staple within the community for years, with residents looking forward to a week of fun and celebrating living in PCSP. This year, it was decided to add a new event, the Dory Dash. The Dory Dash is a five kilometer run, starting at Holy Rosary Church, going onto Beachy Cove Road to Tuckers Hill and finishing at the St. Philip’s Marina. The race is not just for residents, but for everyone who loves a good run! The registration fee is $27 and this includes the runner’s kit and a professional chipped timed race. Funds that are then generated by the run is to be used by Town so it can continue to work towards being an all-inclusive community, a place to be enjoyed by all.

With an Inclusion Committee in the works, undertaken by Recreation Director, Dawn Sharpe, it became apparent that equipment was needed to aid the Town in its strides becoming more inclusive to residents and non-residents.

“This run is new this year and we’re really looking forward to a great turnout,” said Sharpe. “We have become extremely aware of how important taking inclusivity measures are, and inclusivity can mean different things to different people. To some it may mean physical or mental issues, others could have visual and hearing issues. But inclusivity can also include social factors, such as financial restraints. We are here to work to everyone, so raising money for us to be able to better provide to our residents and guests through this run has become a focus. No one should ever be left out.”

The Dory Dash will be taking place on July 2nd at 8 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Parish Hall. Shuttle service will bring racers from the parking lot of Beachy Cove Elementary to the start line beginning 7 a.m. and return racers to the school after the race. Registration fee is $27 and runners can register online through the Running Room.
