Naming Ceremony for the Voisey’s Brook Softball Field

Naming Ceremony for the Voisey’s Brook Softball Field

PORTUGAL COVE-ST.PHILIP’S – The local, beloved softball field in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s Voisey’s Brook Park will be recognized in a Naming Ceremony on Friday, September 9th, after a resident who was integral in the creation of the field. With this naming ceremony, there will also be the first annual Bill Churchill Memorial Softball Tournament.

Bill Churchill was pivotal in the planning, fundraising and construction of the Voisey’s Brook softball field, which originally opened in 1977. Mr. Churchill passed away in 1993, and in appreciated of his longtime service to the sport of softball and the many contributions to the area, The Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s (PCSP) will be dedicating the field in his honor.

Voisey’s Brook Park was reopened just over a year ago in 2015 after a two year upgrade was completed. With an addition of a large and small breed dog park, a skateboard park, a new playground, mini softball pitch, expansion of the softball field and 3.5 kilometers of walking trail, the park is a community pillar. The project wouldn’t have been completed without the financial contribution made from the Department of Municipal Affairs under the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Town invites residents, visitors, families and those who knew Mr. Churchill to come out and recognize the hard work and dedication this man put into his town and the creation of a recreational staple for PCSP.

People are encouraged to let the Town know if they or someone they knew played a role in these efforts to RSVP, so they can be acknowledged for their contributions as well. The ceremony will be starting at 6 p.m.

Accompanying the naming ceremony, the First Annual Bill Churchill Memorial Softball Tournament will be taking place, from September 9th to 11th. This will be a mixed tournament that will play throughout the weekend.

To RSVP, please call Dawn Sharpe, at 895-5662 or email [email protected].

Please note: Due to impending weather, the Town will decide early on Friday, September 9th if the Naming Ceremony will be held that evening or will be postponed to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 10th.
