Hope & Horses Mental Health Program Opening New Facility

One year ago the Hope Arena was still in the beginning stages of planning to build a modest indoor arena so that a mental health program in memory of Alison Walsh could operate year round. Alison died by suicide in 2013 and each year a memorial event is held to celebrate her life. Alison’s Horse “Tinker” also known as the “Spirit Horse” brings hope and recovery to others with mental health issues. Hope has been built and this year’s memorial event is the Grand Opening of the Hope Arena.

The Grand Opening is Saturday, August 26,2017. The Hope Arena is located at 640 Indian Meal Line, Portugal Cove. Opening ceremonies are at 11 a.m. with donations gladly accepted. Pony rides will be offered from 12:30—2:30. Pony rides are $5 each.

The Hope Arena and Spirit Horse Mental Health Program are operated by Te’sipow Therapeutic Services which was established in January 2015 by Erin Gallant. The visions of the services are aimed at enhancing the mental health and life skills of youth, adults, families, and groups through therapeutic interaction with horses. Te’sipow is honored to provides services and form partnerships through organizations such as St. John’s Women’s Center, St. John’s Native Friendship Center, Eastern Health and the Health Care Foundation. Mental Illness doesn’t take a rain check for bad weather and now the Spirit Horse program won’t have to either.
