Kim Churchill
Kim Churchill has lived in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s for the past twenty years with her husband Todd and their two children, Hunter and Carter. She is a proud graduate of Memorial University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and a Certificate in Criminology.
An ambitious professional, Kim brings more than two decades of senior management experience in human resources, marketing, communications, and community development. Her career has included leadership positions in the non-profit sector with St. John Ambulance, the Community Sector Council, the Diabetes Association, and as Executive Director of the Cerebral Palsy Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. These roles provided her with extensive experience in strategic planning, budget management, community engagement, and advocating for meaningful policy changes. She has received recognition for several programs she developed and has presented her work at major conferences and events locally, nationally, and internationally.
Kim’s life has been defined by service, volunteerism, and advocacy. She has received many awards for her contributions, including the Henry Vlug Award (2023) from the Canadian Association of the Deaf, recognizing political and legal advocacy that advanced equality for Deaf Canadians, and the NL Human Rights Award (2022) for her efforts in advancing human rights in Newfoundland and Labrador. She is also a past recipient of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association NL President’s Club Award, the Canadian Diabetes Distinguished Dedication Award, and was nationally recognized as both Youth Volunteer Corps Role Model of the Year and Flare Volunteer of the Year.
Currently, Kim serves as a volunteer board Director with Unseen and Unheard No Longer (U2NL), a newly formed parent support and education organization representing families of medically complex children who are often unsupported or under supported by government. She also volunteers with NL Health Services as a Patient and Family Experience Advisor, where she helps ensure healthcare planning is informed by the lived experiences of patients and families. These roles demonstrate Kim’s ongoing commitment to advocacy, collaboration, and ensuring that systems remain accountable to the people they serve.
Kim’s passion for protecting the rights of others is also evident in her personal life. She recently concluded a six-year human rights complaint on behalf of her Deaf son, Carter, against one of the largest public institutions in the province. This effort, carried out with perseverance and determination, reflects her unwavering commitment to equity, justice, and meaningful change.
