Improving town services and controlling taxes are key priorities for residents of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s.
While going door to door, residents have told me about their hopes for Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s. They love our community and want to experience more of what it has to offer.
This is what I’ve learned through my community work and living in our beautiful town since 1994 with my family.
I was first elected to town council in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s from 2013—2017 and again served from 2021 to January 2025. My community work includes volunteering with the Lions Club and with a local church-sponsored food bank.
People expect council to provide better services, and to make our community safer and more accessible by building sidewalks and walking trails. Road maintenance is also crucial, along with improving efficiency in delivering town services.
My priorities include:
- Holding the line on taxes.
- Transparent decision-making.
- Walking trails, sidewalks and recreation.
- Extending water and sewer services.
- Infrastructure maintenance.
- Providing the integrity that residents deserve.
Creating opportunities for seniors, including housing and activities, is vital. Too many of those who built our community are forced to move elsewhere when they downsize.
Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s is also a growing community and will become more so when a new high school opens in 2026. The town must be ready to provide recreational opportunities for families.
In addition, residents are concerned about the lack of opportunities for small businesses to locate within our community. As founder of Boulder Books, a leading book publisher in Atlantic Canada, I am keenly aware of the barriers facing businesses looking to grow or locate operations in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s. New businesses provide much-needed tax revenue and reduce the burden on residents. They also provide more diversity of services, saving trips to St. John’s.
If elected, these will be my priorities for the next four years. I will be available, accountable and shall respond to your concerns and ideas. Above all, you can count on me to work for you.
