Notice of Temporary By-Pass: Portugal Cove Waste Water Treatment Plant
The Town of Portugal Cove – St. Philip’s has applied to Environment and Climate Change Canada for a Temporary Bypass Authorization (TBA) to replace a critical piece of equipment, the newly purchased Ultraviolet Disinfection Unit.
The Temporary Bypass will allow the sewage discharge to go through the existing system of grit removal, mechanical screens and biological treatment process, but excludes the final stage of the Ultraviolet Disinfection Unit. Instead, the effluent will discharge through a temporarily placed route to the existing outfall.
With this temporary setup, it is possible that we will not be able to meet all our treatment objectives.
We anticipate a 45-day construction period for this unit replacement which is due to start April 1 and be completed June 12, 2025. We are working with specialists to expedite the construction period.
During this period, we ask that our residents of Portugal Cove conserve their water usage to avoid taxing the system. Some considerations to reduce use on the system are:
- Reduce toilet flushing
- Take shorter showers
- Store drinking water in the fridge
