No Mow May Initiative
Update: June 1st, 2022
The Advisory Committee on the Environment (ACE) and the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s are asking residents to hold off breaking out the lawn mower this this spring and encouraging you to join the “No Mow May” campaign. Letting the wildflowers on your lawn bloom helps provide a vital source of nectar for bees and other pollinating insects and gives them a better chance of survival all summer.
By joining the No Mow May campaign, you are not only helping the pollinators – you are also creating a great opportunity for your whole household to witness the wide diversity of natural plants and insects that inhabit our outdoor spaces.
And hey – if you like what you see, why not extend your “lack of effort” into June and July? Or try allowing a small section of your lawn to grow and bloom with wildflowers.
We encourage all residents to foster greater connections with the great outdoors and No Mow May is just one simple but highly effective way of creating more connection to the natural environment without leaving your own front (or back!) yard.
