Celebrating Municipal Awareness Week – May 9th to 13th, 2022

The Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, in partnership with Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador and the Professional Municipal Administrators, has proclaimed May 9-13 as Municipal Awareness Week.

Good municipal governance is foundational to the province’s economic, health and social well-being. Over 2,000 people lead and work in the municipal sector fulfilling the roles and duties of elected officials, administrators, professional planners, staff and volunteers.

Municipal government is responsible for many services that enhance the quality of life for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, including essential services, programs and infrastructure. Sustainable, vibrant communities reflect the work of dedicated mayors, councillors, staff and volunteers, as well as the collaboration and partnership of residents.

Here in the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, the Town has partnered with Beachy Cove Elementary to once again host the grade 4 students to learn about our municipality! Through in class sessions and a visit to the Town Hall, students learned all about our town council, the role of municipal staff, how to vote in an election, and they even created platforms and ran their own campaigns.

We are pleased to announce that after a very exciting junior election (which even included a tie!), our 2022 junior council winners are: Jana, Jacob, Ara, Grayson and Zachary. Way to go!
