Statement from Council on Advisory Committees

Statement from Town of Portugal Cove – St. Philip’s Council

Dissolution of Advisory Committees

September 14th, 2023 – On September 13th, 2023 after careful consideration and a thorough review of our existing advisory committees, Council has voted to dissolve all advisory committees, effective immediately. Council recognizes advisory committees for their multitude of contributions, and thank them for their dedication to the community over the last number of years. The decision to dissolve advisory committees was not taken lightly, and it comes as a result of Councils desire to continually work towards better governance and community engagement. The goal is to encourage the formation of volunteer community groups independent of Council.

Volunteer community groups independent of Council will have more flexibility in their structure and focus, and ability to be working groups, while providing enhanced collaboration throughout the community. This provides more opportunities to be free of the constraints of legislation.

Council understands that residents may have concerns about the impact of this decision, and want to assure that Council remains committed to addressing the needs and concerns of residents. Over the coming months, Council will engage with residents to garner interest in creating groups and seek input on moving forward.

While the advisories committees may be dissolved, their contributions will be integrated into the broader framework of our municipality to ensure that we continue to provide the best possible services and representation to our community.

On behalf of Council, thank you to residents and the advisory committees for your understanding and support as we work together to make the Town of Portugal Cove – St. Philip’s an even better place to live, work, and thrive.
